Elisabetta D'Arienzo: When Vietri Ceramics Becomes Contemporary Art

Elisabetta D'Arienzo: When Vietri Ceramics Becomes Contemporary Art

The real Amalfi Coast doesn't just live in Instagram's glossy postcards. It hides in the details, in artists' studios, in workshops where skilled hands transform clay into poetry. One of these is Elisabetta D'Arienzo Ceramics of Vietri.

The real Amalfi Coast doesn't just live in Instagram's glossy postcards. It hides in the details, in artists' studios, in workshops where skilled hands transform clay into poetry. At Hotel Margherita, we've chosen to tell this authentic coast through the Margherita Art Collection, a selection of works by local artists representing the creative excellence of our territory.

Among these, we'd like to introduce you to Elisabetta D'Arienzo, a ceramist from Vietri sul Mare who has revolutionized tradition with a visionary and contemporary gaze.

An Artistic Journey Between Tradition and Revolution
Born in Vietri sul Mare into a family of women connected to the artistic world, Elisabetta has always had a complex relationship with ceramics. "I don't identify as a representative of traditional ceramics, though I'm linked to it by a desire to experiment in a contemporary way," she confesses sincerely. Her journey has taken her through the Academy of Fine Arts, sculpture, the Italian School of Comics, illustration, and graphic design, in constant search of a personal language.

Ceramics, initially seen as a fallback, instead became the perfect medium to express her inner worlds. "In a very impersonal society, I found in ceramics a personal place, a home," Elisabetta explains. For her, this millennia-old art represents the possibility of centering one's personality and way of living.

Elisabetta's Unique Style: Symbolism and Graffito
What distinguishes Elisabetta D'Arienzo's work is her ability to merge illustration and ceramics into an original language. Her works are recognizable for:

·       White and manganese: a chromatic choice that deliberately departs from the vivid colors of Vietri tradition

·       Graffito: a technique through which she creates true visual puzzles, layering symbolism and meaning

·       Unconventional themes: from the Neapolitan cult of souls to the tentacular intelligence of the octopus, from the marine world to reinterpreted mythological creatures

"I wanted to give a new contemporary interpretation to the Vietri style," she recounts. "The territory has always been accustomed to welcoming, Vietri ceramics have always welcomed foreigners. It's mixed by nature." And it's precisely in this openness that Elisabetta found space for her personal research.

The Mermaids of Hotel Margherita: A Meeting Between Art and Hospitality
The works displayed in Hotel Margherita's lobby were born from a special encounter. Andrea Ferraioli and Suela Cimino, our hotel patrons, had seen one of Elisabetta's majolica pieces that reminded them of one of their daughters. From that emotion, a commission was born for a series of unique mermaids, created ten years ago, which still welcome hotel guests today.

"There's a feeling that goes beyond the relationship between buyer and artist," Elisabetta explains. "There's mutual respect." These mermaids perfectly represent her approach: the union of illustration and ceramics, the peculiarity of white and manganese, mythological creatures that seem to emerge from the depths of the Mediterranean.

Other works present in the hotel are the ceramic boxes – "ceramics that contain" – populated with marine figures, human and non-human. "The ignorant fairies," Elisabetta calls them, with a reference that mixes popular culture and fascination with the occult.

The Amalfi Coast: A Springboard for Visibility and Responsibility
For Elisabetta, the Amalfi Coast represents much more than just a geographical location. "Every self-respecting ceramist sees the coast as a springboard for visibility, an opportunity to make their art sustainable," she states. But with this opportunity also comes responsibility.

"I strongly believe in returning to working with slowness, thinking more about what we do, rather than fixating on quantitative productivity," she reflects. "Ceramists have the responsibility to find a new balance between quality and quantity, and clients too must be sensitive to the value of creativity."

Her inspiration comes from direct experience of the territory, especially in winter, away from the summer crowds. "One should go out into nature at least once a week," she advises. It's in the identity mix of the "costaiolo" – suspended between sea and mountain – that she finds nourishment for her art.

Discovering the Coast's Art: An Invitation to Curiosity
Displaying Elisabetta D'Arienzo's works at Hotel Margherita is our response to those seeking an authentic experience on the Amalfi Coast. Not just sea and lemons, but also an artistic ferment that has always characterized these places and continues to evolve.

We invite you to take time to observe the details during your stay. The mermaids in the lobby, the marine boxes, each work tells a story of research, passion, and respect for an ancient art that continues to reinvent itself. It's this curiosity – toward places, people, art – that transforms a vacation into an experience of discovery.
